A Brief History of the Shingwauk School and Algoma University College

1831   Chief Shingwauk (1773-1854) develops idea of a “teaching wigwam” for the Anishnabek

1832   First “Shingwauk” mission school built in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario

1873   Shingwauk’s sons Chief Augustin Shingwauk and Chief Henry Buhkwuijene, along with missionary
            Edward Wilson, start Shingwauk Home for Native children at Garden River; building burns down six
            days later.

1874   School rebuilt on 90 acres of land purchased by Wilson

1875   Wilson deeds land to Anglican Church under condition that it is held in permanent trust for the education
            of Native youth

1935   Existing main brick building constructed on Shingwauk site to replace original stone building

1956   Anna McCrea Public School opened on Shingwauk property

1957   Sir James Dunn Secondary School opened on Shingwauk property

1965  Algoma University College gains affiliation with Laurentian University

1967  AUC offers first classes in several buildings on the Cambrian College Campus 
            (now Sault College of Applied Arts and Technology)

1970  Shingwauk closed as a residential school

1970  Keewatinung Anishinabek Institute opens as a centre for culture, education and research

1971  AUC and Keewatinung Institute move to Shingwauk property

1972  Principles of Association agreed upon by University and Keewatinung Institute

1975  Keewatinung Institute closes

1975  Anglican Diocese sells 35 acres of the Shingwauk site to AUC

1979 The Shingwauk Project is created

1981  First Shingwauk Indian Residential School reunion

1988  AUC Board sets up committee to study implications of applying for independent charter

1990  AUC Board ratifies Policy on First Nations/Canadian Cross-Cultural  Development

1990   Board increases its composition with the addition of three Aboriginal representatives

1991   Garden River First Nation files $10 million lawsuit against Anglican Church for 90 acres of land, 
            including AUC land

1991  Second Shingwauk Indian Residential School Reunion: 
            “The Future of the Shingwauk as a First Nations/Canadian Education and Research Centre”

1992   First Nations request name change to Shingwauk University

1993   Shingwauk Alumni host first three day Healing Circle at Garden River First Nation Community Centre

1994    Lawsuit settled; Shingwauk Education Trust (established as a Provincial Trust on behalf of Aboriginal
             Education) gains title of 20 acres of land plus $722,000 for loss of 35 acre AUC campus

1994   Formal independence charter application for Shingwauk University sent to Ministry of  Education and
            Training; charter application not granted

1996  Third Shingwauk Indian Residential School Reunion:
            Formalization of the Children of Shingwauk Alumni  Association and “Declaration of Shingwauk
            Reunion 1996”

1997   Chronology of the Children of Shingwauk Alumni Claims Process

1998    AUC Senate and Board call for establishment of a Shingwauk University Development Task Force

1998    The Children of Shingwauk Alumni Association Council Convention, May 8-10.  Shingwauk Alumni 
             Office established on site, August 1998

1998    Successful meeting at AUC re: establishment of Shingwauk University Development Task Force, 
             August 21-22. Followed by AUC Board of Governors approval. Naming of representatives to Task
             Force by Aboriginal organizations in process

1999   The Shingwauk Project Web Site goes on-line on the World Wide Web

2000  Fourth Shingwauk Indian Residential School Reunion:
          “Shingwauk’s Vision in the Seventh Generation: Residential School Reunion and Gathering” 

2001   Shingwauk Alumni host second three day Healing Circle at Dan Pine Healing Lodge, 
            Garden River First Nation, Garden River, Ontario, May 23-25

2001  Shingwauk Alumni host “CHARTING OUR WAY” a Strategic Planning Conference at AUC Sept. 20-22

2002 Fifth Shingwauk Indian Residential School Reunion:
          "Shingwauk's Vision in the New Millennium"
